YCEE PLANS PUBLIC EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
The Yukon Council on Economy & Environment (YCEE) made plans for public education activities during its meeting last weekend in Dawson City.
The YCEE will be sponsoring public education forums on the Delgamuukw decision and on sustainable development issues of concern. These are planned for May.
"We are planning the forums because people have stressed the importance of bringing more certainty to resource issues in the Yukon," said Jennifer Mauro, Chair. "By bringing experts and different stakeholder groups together, we hope to better understand the implications of the Delgamuukw decision and its effect in the Yukon."
The YCEE will also host public talks on sustainable development involving experts coming to Whitehorse in May for the conference on Sustainable Development in the Arctic.
At the meeting in Dawson, Council members also reviewed the Yukon Government's implementation of the Yukon Conservation Strategy, discussed an economic diversification strategy, developed draft regulations to govern the YCEE, and finalized its operating procedures.
The YCEE was established in 1989 with a mandate to encourage sustainable development in the Yukon. It has 11 members, with representation from First Nations, business, labour, mining, environmental groups, women's organizations, and municipal governments.
